Creating Calm, Joyful Beginnings for the New Term
Accompanying Episode 11 of the Atelier Podcast
September can be one of the busiest months in any nursery calendar. New children are settling in, familiar children are moving up to the next age group, and educators are keen to launch exciting new projects. However, at Atelier Nursery, we believe that the best way to begin the year is not with a flurry of activity, but with a deliberate focus on relationships, routines, and wellbeing a philosophy we call Simple September.
Why Keep September Simple?
Transitions can be overwhelming for children, even those returning to a familiar setting. They must adapt to new routines, re-establish friendships, and, in some cases, form new relationships with a different key person. By simplifying September, we give children the time and emotional space to process these changes at their own pace, without the added pressure of overly complex plans or new demands.
A Focus on Relationships First
Our primary focus in September is ensuring every child feels secure and connected. For new starters, this means plenty of one-to-one time with their key person, gentle introductions to small group activities, and consistent routines that help them know what to expect. For returning children, it’s about rekindling friendships, revisiting familiar spaces, and gradually introducing new experiences once they feel settled.
Supporting Educators as Well as Children
A calm September is just as beneficial for staff as it is for children. Our leadership team reduces unnecessary meetings and paperwork during the first month so that educators can dedicate their time to observation, interaction, and responsive planning. This not only improves the quality of settling-in experiences but also helps maintain staff wellbeing which, in turn, directly benefits the children.
Balancing Stability with Excitement
Keeping things simple does not mean standing still. Once children feel secure, we begin to introduce new provocations and projects, carefully balancing familiarity with opportunities for fresh exploration. This ensures that returning children remain inspired while still having the security of familiar routines.
Tips for a Smooth September
Prioritise unhurried interactions over structured activities in the first weeks.
Revisit familiar resources and spaces before introducing new ones.
Use the first month to deeply observe children’s interests and needs, shaping future plans accordingly.
By keeping September simple, we create the conditions for learning and relationships to flourish. It’s an approach that recognises that children and adults do their best work when they feel calm, connected, and ready to explore.
