Leadership in the Early Years – Building Strong Foundations
Accompanying Episode 13 of the Atelier Podcast
At Atelier Nursery, we believe that leadership is more than a title. It is the way we shape culture, inspire pedagogy, and create the conditions where both children and adults can thrive. Leadership is felt in the everyday rhythm of the setting; in the decisions we make, the way we listen, and the vision we hold for the future.
Leadership vs. Management
It’s easy to confuse leadership with management. Management is about systems, processes, and organisation, all essential in a busy early years setting. Leadership, however, is about people. It is relational. Leadership calls us to inspire, to influence, and to hold space for others to grow. Strong leaders balance both, ensuring that the “what” of daily operations doesn’t eclipse the “why” of our practice.
Styles of Leadership
At Atelier Nursery, we draw on a blend of leadership styles. Collaborative leadership is at the heart of our approach. Valuing each voice, nurturing autonomy, and recognising the skills and strengths of the whole team. By modelling openness and curiosity, leaders create environments where innovation and reflective practice are not only welcomed but expected.
Why Leadership Matters for Pedagogy
Leadership has a direct impact on pedagogy. The way a leader guides discussions, makes decisions, and navigates challenges influences the quality of interactions in the nursery. From curriculum choices to daily routines, leadership shapes children’s experiences of learning, exploration, and belonging.
Looking at the Bigger Picture
Good leadership also considers sustainability: staff wellbeing, retention, and professional fulfilment. When leaders support their teams with clarity and respect, they not only create high-quality practice but also long-term stability for children and families.
If this has sparked your curiosity, our full conversation in the Atelier Talks podcast dives deeper into the philosophies of leadership and how they come to life in our nurseries.
